High-Purity Gas & Liquid Site Installation

Site installation and commissioning services.

For engineers and contractors working on critical, high-purity environments – delivered by the team that designs and builds the systems we install.

Specifying or managing a high-purity gas or liquid system installation means one weak joint, one missed test, or one badly documented weld can cost a facility its validation, its production schedule, or its safety record.

Orbital has been installing high-purity gas and liquid pipe systems on live, often safety-critical sites since 1988. Our site teams don’t just fit pipework to a drawing, they’re the same organisation that designed it, fabricated it in our ISO Class 5/6 cleanrooms, and pressure- and helium-leak-tested every weld before it ever reached site. That continuity, from design through to commissioning and handover, is what contractors and facilities engineers find indispensable.

Why contractors and engineers choose Orbital for site installation

35+ years of high-purity installation experience:

means our knowledge of complex site installations ensures that contamination or containment failure is not an option.

In-house design, fabrication and installation:

engineers who produce your P&IDs and 3D models are accountable for what goes into the final installation, reducing handover risk between design, fabrication and site teams.

Orbital welding as standard:

for high-integrity, fully penetrating welds with excellent repeatability.

Certified to recognised industry frameworks:

including CHAS Elite and BCGA membership, with welding and design carried out to GMP, SEMI, ASME and BS EN codes.

A nationwide site presence:

for rapid deployment, plus long-term permanent on-site teams for major manufacturers.

Full testing and documentation on:

every job.

Our site
installation and commissioning process

Site installation at Orbital isn’t a standalone trade package; it’s stage four of an integrated, five-stage delivery model that starts before a single pipe is cut and continues after the system is handed over.

1. Project management

Every installation is led by a dedicated project manager, supported by a site supervisor and team leaders for each work area.

2. Design and build

On-site teams install pipework, components and panels to the validated design, working to the safety standards and access requirements of your facility. Installation includes orbital and manual TIG welding on site, mechanical and electrical integration, and on-site commissioning, with helium mass spectrometer leak testing, used to verify the integrity of every welded joint before sign-off.

3. Installation

Before installation begins, our engineers complete a full site survey, measuring pipework runs, planning routes, and confirming system requirements against your P&ID and budget. This feeds into 3D CAD design, component selection and manufacturing. Spools, panels and assemblies are fabricated and orbital-welded in-house, then pressure- and helium-leak-tested. So, what arrives on your site is already proven, not just pre-cut.

4. Documentation

Every installation is supported by a documentation package built up from the original site survey onward – component schedules, layout schematics, P&IDs, weld maps and logs, welder qualifications, pressure test certificates, full 3.1 material certification, and as-built drawings. This is handed over at completion, giving you the audit trail required for validation, insurance, and ongoing compliance.

5. Ongoing support

Installation is followed by planned maintenance schedules built around minimising your downtime, plus rapid-response unplanned maintenance from engineers based across the UK. For pressure systems, we provide Written Scheme of Examination (WSE) services through our Pressure Safe-qualified engineers, a legal requirement for owners and operators of pressure systems, including for installations originally carried out by third parties.

What's included in our gas and liquid pipework installation service

Built for the sectors where purity and containment are non-negotiable

Orbital’s site installation teams work across:

Semiconductor:

Sub-fab and fab gas delivery systems where toxic, flammable or pyrophoric process gases demand absolute containment.

Pharmaceutical:

High-purity gas and liquid systems for environments where contamination risk is also a patient safety issue.

Clean energy:

Including hydrogen, where the smallest molecule and explosive risk make weld integrity and containment critical.

Research & academia:

Flexible, often complex installations for facilities that need to switch between projects.

Proven on major UK projects

At Nexperia’s Manchester semiconductor facility, Orbital has maintained a permanent on-site presence for over 30 years, installing more than 10,000m of pipework in tube sizes from ¼” to 6″ OD, with 2–12 operatives on site depending on programme stage, alongside scheduled and emergency maintenance work.

Frequently asked questions

What is high-purity gas pipe site installation?
High-purity gas pipe site installation is the on-site fitting, welding, testing and commissioning of pipework that delivers process gases or liquids without introducing contamination. It typically uses orbital welding for fully penetrating, repeatable welds, and is verified with pressure and helium leak testing before handover.
What standards apply to high-purity gas system installation?
High-purity gas system installation is typically carried out to GMP, SEMI, ASME and BS EN codes, depending on sector. Pressure systems also fall under UK pressure systems safety regulations (PSSR), which require a Written Scheme of Examination.
Do you provide site installation and commissioning together?
Yes. Orbital provides site installation and commissioning as a single service, installation is followed by pressure and helium leak testing, system validation, and documentation handover, so the system is proven and ready for use, not just physically fitted.
Can Orbital install systems it didn't design or manufacture?
Yes, although most clients benefit from Orbital’s integrated approach, where the team designing and fabricating the system also installs it. We can also assess and provide Written Scheme of Examination documentation for pressure systems installed by third parties.
Do you offer nationwide site installation cover?
Yes. Orbital’s site engineers are based across the UK, supporting both planned installation programmes and rapid-response unplanned maintenance, alongside permanent on-site teams for long-term clients.
What documentation do we receive after installation?
You receive a full package including component schedules, layout schematics, P&IDs, weld maps and logs, welder qualifications, pressure test certificates, 3.1 material certification and as-built drawings — built up from the initial site survey, not compiled retrospectively.
