Design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of high-purity gas and liquid delivery systems since 1988
Orbital is a market leader in high- and ultra-high-purity gas and liquid delivery systems used in demanding manufacturing applications.
Our founder, Ian Pearson, set up Orbital Fabrications Ltd in a rented industrial unit close to Cambridge with just 500 sq. ft of space. Similar to many small fabrication businesses, Ian’s expertise was in welding. Such was his skill, that Orbital came to the attention of businesses and sectors where the quality and integrity of welds was, quite literally, mission-critical. Projects for NASA, for academic institutions and companies in the emerging semiconductor sector followed. Ian was soon joined in the business by sister Sue and brother Pip and growth continued, with Orbital relocating to larger premises in nearby St Ives a few years later. We continued to fulfil ever more demanding projects for high-purity gas and liquid delivery systems, developing an integrated approach which sets us apart from many in the field.
At Orbital Fabrications, precision is more than just a standard, it’s the foundation of everything we do. We build systems that ensure safety, reliability and purity for industries where failure is not an option.
Orbital
Although we have come a long way from our origins in general metal fabrication, the craftsmanship of our welders remains at the heart of what we deliver.
This is reflected in our brand promise:
Welded . Pure . Secure
Orbital remained in the ownership of the Pearson family until 2023, when Bergman & Beving acquired a majority stake.
Today, our 37,000 sq. ft manufacturing base includes 6000 sq. ft of environmentally controlled clean areas, along with full system design, project management and documentation capabilities, a comprehensive CNC machining workshop and extensive testing facilities. A thorough understanding of all applicable standards, including GMP, SEMI, ASME and BS EN codes, ensures that system design meets respective industry criteria.
Orbital’s scope of supply includes
Gas control equipment
Liquid control equipment
Fluid systems
Tube welding
Pipe spool fabrication
Process pipework services
Stainless steel fabrications
High-purity welding
Skilled in a range of welding techniques, the company’s team of craftsmen is best-known for its expertise in orbital welding: this delivers high-purity, high-integrity fully penetrating welds with excellent repeatability and is therefore the first choice for applications where containment is crucial—notably the delivery of toxic, pyrophoric or explosive process gases. As a former FTSE Executive Director, I’m now thriving in my role at Bergman & Beving, where I lead one of their dynamic business Orbital and newly acquired Modus Gauges.
“Outside work, I’m an avid sports enthusiast and still working on my golf game—progress over perfection!”
Chief Operating Officer
“As COO I oversee all operational activities at our facility in St Ives: estimating, production control, production, quality, purchasing, customer support and stores. Fortunately, I am supported by a very able team, who provide our clients with the highest levels of service. As part of the Senior Management Team, I am also involved in shaping the business strategy of Orbital and for offering direction and leadership in rolling this out.
“I have spent my entire career in manufacturing, including the past 25 years with Orbital. I am proud to have been involved in its growth in all areas, which has given me great understanding of the business, our clients and how we can best support them.
“When not at work, I like to be outside, cycling, walking or running (slowly) with family, friends and my dog. I love travel and to explore different parts of the world and also watching sport and going to gigs.”
Projects and Engineering Director
“I oversee all design, engineering, and nationwide site projects, leading diverse, high-performing teams to achieve successful outcomes. I also drive continuous improvement, foster individual growth, and ensure efficient, effective operations across diverse client sectors.
“I began my career as an apprentice with one of Orbital’s competitors, which provided me with a good foundation in the business and a platform to continue my studies, where I gained an appreciation for best practices in manufacturing that I now apply to design and engineering projects and the development of new services.
“My interests outside work are varied: socialising with friends, travelling and experiencing different cultures and cuisines, training and keeping active, food, music and podcasts
Production Manager
“I’m Production Manager, responsible for review of orders, technical input, planning, monitoring and ensuring deliveries are on time and despatched in line with customer requirement.
“Having been with Orbital for more than 25 years, I have a wealth of knowledge of our customers and industry eco-systems. ExecutiveDirector
I am currently a shareholder and Executive Director of Orbital, working alongside James and with a focus on maintaining Orbital’s growth trajectory.
“After joining the business over 30 years ago, when we were working out of one small unit, I have helped develop the business from one with a turnover of £300,000 to the multi-million-pound operation we are today. As the longest-serving team member, I have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the sectors we serve and I am very happy to pass on this ‘institutional knowledge’ to more recent employees. I firmly believe we learn as a team and am always available to listen, help, advise and encourage.

I work closely with the leadership team to drive performance, strengthen decision-making, and ensure projects deliver long-term value.
“Having worked across the financial services, retail, and trade development industries, I bring a broad perspective shaped by time in FTSE 100 organisations. Combined with a strong commercial mindset, this experience helps me connect financial insight with operational and strategic priorities, supporting Orbital’s continued growth and innovation.
“Outside of work, I enjoy travel, photography, and discovering new places with my family. I’m also a craft beer enthusiast, and when the opportunity arises, I’m usually hunting down the latest New England IPAs.”
Dual containment, through coaxial pipework and Orbital’s signature Valve Manifold Box (VMB) provide further reassurance for system operators.
